With our strong background in environmental design, KSA were invited by Radian to design one of the first truly ‘Zero Carbon’ developments in the UK. The brief for the scheme was to develop a sustainable community that provided well designed family accommodation and made maximum use of renewable energy sources incorporating the latest building technologies by achieving Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) Level 6 ‘Zero Carbon Homes’.

Access to the site is from an unadopted road which also serves Stoneham Cemetery, a relationship which was considered and respected in the design proposal. The development is in close proximity to the Ford Transit factory and M27, both of which have potential noise implications. The scheme falls under the flight path for Southampton Airport posting restrictions such as building height, renewable technologies and ecological enhancements (discouraging birds).

Where possible units were standardised to reduce build costs, typically much higher on a Code 6 scheme and this has influenced the architectural language which hints at the surrounding terraced housing. A contemporary pallet of materials was used to enhance the scheme and reduce future maintenance requirements.

The scheme was completed in March 2012 to the delight of all involved. The houses sit well in the location and are an attractive addition to the area. Kevin McCloud from Grand Designs opened the development in May 2012 and it was featured on the BBC South Today programme both events reflecting the success of achieving the rare Code Level 6 accreditation, the first such scheme to be completed in Southampton.

At KSA our people is our culture.

People are at the centre of everything we do, we foster and nurture a creative and innovative environment in which all excel.

Experience KSA

Each house has a computer networked to the RSL which provides useful information such as energy consumption and cost, water usage and even local bus timetables. To encourage the residents to be more sustainably aware, an area of the site is allocated to allotments.

The scheme has won a number of awards including: International Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice 2012, Inside Housing Sustainable Housing Awards 2012 for Sustainable Smaller Housing Project of the Year & Low Energy Social Housing Project of the Year, Inside Housing Sustainable Housing Awards 2013 for Green Energy Performance and The Sunday Times Innovation Award for Building Technology 2013.
