Coldeast Scout Hut, Park Gate

Redevelopment of the former Coldeast Scout Hut in Park Gate, Fareham, with 9 apartments, providing much needed affordable housing within the borough.

KSA were appointed by Fareham Borough Council following a previous Outline Planning consent for 7 units on the site. In reviewing the scheme and design principles we were able to maximise the site’s potential to include 9 residential units without being overbearing on the surrounding area.

The scale was kept to the predominant height in the surrounding residential area of 2 storey, with a domestic feel about the apartments. Materials were carefully chosen to reflect the traditional feel of the local vernacular, but with the addition of black boarding to create individualism.

Every apartment has a private balcony or defensible outside space which is directly accessible. This coupled with public amenity space on and surrounding the site gives a good connection from inside to outside living, and engagement with the natural environment. Balconies, along with large windows and pop out features to the west of the building gives character and provides natural light to each unit, as well as providing passive surveillance to the street frontage, car parking and adjacent public open space.

The development has also improved the pedestrian and vehicular access to the adjacent school. Making a distinct footpath for pedestrians, including school pupils, creating a safer route.

Planning was secured for this £1.4 million scheme in 2020. KSA are now working with Fareham Borough Council on the technical package with work on site expected to be complete by 2023.
